Psychology and Computers

Computers and psychology are interwoven in a variety of ways. Technology has a significant impact on the way psychological research and treatment are performed. Psychologists can now reach a broader audience and deliver services in more efficient ways. This is especially the case during pandemics, like the recent Covid-19 epidemic where digital technology allows patients to receive treatment at the comfort of their homes.

Computers have a long history in the study human psychology. They started with the development and application of magnetic resonance imaging scanners (MRIs) and electroencephalogram machines that enabled scientists to capture images of the brain while conducting psychological tests. Computers are also able to store and analyze huge amounts of data to enable more precise and reproducible research.

In addition, computer-aided design allows researchers to build sophisticated models of the mind. These models can be tested to determine how they react to various situations. This is an enormous improvement over traditional methods of gathering psychological data such as self-report questionnaires and interviews, which only capture just one aspect at time and often require subjects to be enticed into participating.

In the current era the fields of computing and psychology are now inextricably linked. Psychology students are well-positioned to help develop technology that will define the future. This is especially so since our relationship to technology is constantly evolving. New tools for measuring and assessing are constantly being developed. Interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming more and more crucial in the development of these tools and also in knowing its impact on people. This is reflected by our degree program, which includes the core modules in psychology and computing and a range of design-related modules.
